Can I lighten my blonde hair with lemon juice? (10 pts for a good answer)?

i have light blonde hair, but its not completely blonde all the way. it gets way lighter at the front and gets almost dirty blonde at the back. has anyone tried putting lemon juice in their hair to lighten it?

i dont want a huge difference, but i want a slightly lighter shade at the back and the roots. when should i use the juice? before or after i take a shower? if i have oily hair should i wash it first? does the hair have to be wet?

one last thing, should i mix the lemon juice with anything else? ive heard that u can mix it with all sorts of stuff to make it work better

Wow! I didn't know people still did this. I did try it when I was younger and it lightened my hair a little. Don't take a shower first. Squeeze the lemon juice onto slightly damp hair and then lay out in the sun. I would check your hair after 30 minutes and see if it is working. Wash out once hair is lightened.

I also brushed on hydrogen peroxide with a comb. You only use a little and use a comb so it looks like natural highlights. I wouldn't go into the sun with peroxide on my hair or it might get too light very quickly. You can blow dry it and then wash your hair immediately after you achieve the desired effects. Be careful when doing this and don't leave it on too long. Sun In also works like hydrogen and you just spray it in your hair and blow it dry.

I have also heard of mixing 1/4 cup strong chamomile tea with 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1 tbsp honey.

I think the best thing to do is go and buy a cheap highlighting kit at the store and have a friend brush in some highlights. If done correctly, this will give you the best results.

yeah you can... just cut one in half and rub it into your hair... the more you are in the sunlight the faster it will bleach it... thats how they do it in Cali.

I've never heard the lemon juice as a hair bleach... But what I have heard and have used and has worked to lighten my dark brown hair is chamomille tea. Just buy some chamomille, boil it in water and wash your hair with that water. It made my hair slightly lighter for the summer.

once in high school i put peroxide in my brothers hair spray, it as when he had a job at the park for the summer. he got a white hair in one spot and thought it was just from the sun....

I've never heard of lemons but if you try the peroxide, only go in the sun for a little bit then wash it out!!!

Yes you can if you sit in the sun. But lemon juice is really not good for your hair; it'll dry it out and can actually burn it in combination with the sun.

Lemon Juice will lighten your hair, but just becarefull because b/c it's so high in acid it can burn and dry your hair. If you decide to do it mix the lemmon juice with leave in conditioner aply it leave it on for a while but avoid the sun while it is on you. do this once a week and your hair will lighten and it will not be damaged!

My mom has blonde hair and used to do this. She would put it on while wet and still standing in the shower (no water running) she would let it sit for a minute. It seemed to work a little but not much of a difference. Dont know any of the other questions you asked. But Ive also heard of people putting peroxide in their hair. Now I have done that, I have dark brown hair and it did change it lighter and gave it a pretty red tint (not orange). You apply it to dry hair and go sit in the sun for about 1/2-1 hour or blow dry it (heat). Not sure how this works on blonde hair. But now my mom uses Sun In and it lightens her hair nicely. You can get this at any drug store in hair care section and its fairly cheap.

You can get proucts that willl protect your hair when you straighten it, just shop around until you find one that works for you, or you could blow dry it straight, but you'd need products to protect your hair in that case, too. Also, you could get a light relaxer, or get it done at the salon. Good luck...

P.S. You can tell from the pic that her hair is naturally curly, and she either flat ironed it, or got it chemically straightened

the only thing you could do to get that look without chemicals, is a straightening iron but I don't think you want to do that either.

yea i agree, if you don't want to straighten you hair you won't get that look, but there is a product called sunsilk straighten up that i use and it works awesome, also for frizz use frizzease, but if u use these product use in moderation if hair is short or it will look greezy, just blow dry using your hand as a brush, use cool air halfway throguht that will help with frizz, that should do the trick

i basically asked my hairdresser to put loads of layers in

shortish on top then getting longer.

then the bottoms kinda long.

i straighten the bottom bit but not really on the layers, only to curve them in towards my head.

clip up half the layers, backcomb the bottom layers, let the top layers down, backcomb those.

its bad in that pic but usually it looks kinda round.

and big.

As you can see in the pictures, the top of my head is kinda a different color blonde from the rest of my hair. I think it's because when I dyed my roots, I left it in too long or something...

okay. so i like totally cheated and looked at yr yahoo page...which actually showed yr myspace where you can see better pictures. and you totally look like 2 different people between when you are blonde and when you are brunette.

i can honestly say you look so much more sophisticated and mature and classy with the dark brown hair. and i would dye it that exact same shade again---like a chestnut brown. it looks soooo much better!!

i would go with brunette, it compliments your skin tone. all i know is that you shouldn't use any ash browns it will turn your hair a funky green, especially with how platinum you are right now...but don't go too dark spring is coming!!

I actually like that hair color. You may want to go a ash blonde... BUT I advise you to go to a salon if your going to go an ash due to the side affect of your hair turning green. Brown I think would be a little too dark and the contrast wouldn't be that great against your skin tone. I would say a dark ash blonde, medium blonde, or light ash brown. I think those would look the best with your face shape and skin tone. When you decide on the color phone the toll free number on the hair box and ask questions on how to prevent side affects, etc, etc.

Your ends look like they would "grab" the color differently than the rest of the hair. You might not like the result you get if you dye it brown on your own. A stylist would most likely add some warm pigments back into your ends before dying it darker so they don't turn black or a "mucky" color.

What ever you do - use a Clairol color. That is the only retail store color that won't ruin your hair. Also it is the only color brand that your hair stylist can do a color corrective over without ruining your hair in case you mess up. If you want to go back to a darker blonde get something level 9 to an 8.

If you want to go back to your natural blonde look; allow your hair grow out and trim it often until your natural hair is to the length you desire. I know, it's tough - but that's the only way to get the "natural" look again. Or go to a VERY expensive salon and get it done.

Unless you can keep up with dying it every 3 weeks when the roots start showing DON'T DO IT!!!

Also, with the recent perm you are taking a chance on damaging it beyond repair, especially if either of these chemical processes have been or will be done by a non-professional.

For the sake of your hair, if you truly want to do this, wait at least one month before attempting to dye it, after the perm.

In my honest opinion though there are very few women, no matter their ethnic background, that can pull off this color hair and have it look good on them. The upkeep is extreme on a full head of naturally dark hair, to keep the roots from showing (you never see her with roots!), therefore it gets expensive to the pocketbook, but also the more you do it the more damage to the cuticle of the hair.

I went from dark brown hair to a golden blonde in one sitting about a month ago. Last weekend I went for my touch up on my roots and told the hair stylist I wanted the golden taken out, So she bleached my roots and put some kind of conditioner that is suppose to take the gold out. Well after she washed this stuff out my hair turned a bluish, grayish color and said it was normal and this should be gone within a few days not it's been 5 days and it's still kinda of grayish. Is anyone familiar with this situation? I am trying my best to do what I can at home cuz I don't have time to go to the Salon......Thanks!

first off dont go back to her. but second wash you'r hair with Dawn dish soap. it'll strip the odd coloring out of it. I once accidentally got slightly purple-gray hair, used Dawn for 2 or 3 days and it was back to what i had wanted. (a hair dresser friend told me to use it, she was right)

She took out all the golden tone and made it 'Ash Blonde'. I would recommend buying the Brilliant Blonde shampoo and condtioner and wash your hair with it because unless you dye it again then, there's nothing you could do to get some color.

I have naturally dark blonde hair but for the past few years have been getting (vanilla) highlights; basically as light as I could go. I love the effect, the blondes mix well together but I'm tired of the maintanence. It is expensive and has to be done very often, my hair dresser is always very booked so its hard to get into her, I've tried other place but have never gotten the same results, and felt like it was a waste of money. Last time I got highlights I also got lowlights thinking that the roots wouldnt be as bad, my hair grows extremely fast and I hate having roots. Being a student I just cant afford this anymore and dont have the time but still love having the lighter hues in my hair. I was considering byeing the at home hair color like L'oreal or Garnier and gettting a color a couple shades lighter than my natural; the kind that brings out different tones in your hair aswell instead of just being a flat color. Should I do this? Will it turn out bad? Everything I need to know...

My stylist instincts want to tell you a big fat no... but I understand where you come from when you say that it can be expensive to get salon hilites and such done.

Unfortunately, I would never ever tell you to go ahead and grab a box of hair dye from the drug store for many reasons:

No matter what the swatch tells you, the color may not come out the way it claims. Without knowing what kind of undertones your hair contains I can't even give a slight suggestion. Be careful of colors that contain the work "ash", they can make your hair look grey and even green, but if you try something that is too warm, it can end up going orange on you.

My professional opinion would be to consider starting to get demi or semi permanent colors on your hair. Redken makes a color line called Shades EQ. It is a semi-permanent color that does not have any sort of lifting ability, it is a deposit only, meaning it will only put color into your hair. Being that you have highlights, you could have a shades color applied all over that will brighten your natural color and enhance the highlights, or get a color that covers the highlights. The benefits to a service like this are numerous. It would in most cases be a lot cheaper then the highlights, and being a semi-permanent, it fades out rather than having to grow it out, meaning no skunk line. I like L'oreal color expert. I comes in lots of shades, and it includes the highlights in the box so the hair color and the highlights look good together. Its more expensive than other brands (about $15 at Wal-Mart) and I usually have to buy two boxes because my hair is long and thick, but I really like the results.

Bleached Blonde and Platinum Blonde can look similar in some light, but for the most part bleached blonde hair would be considered to have a more yellow tint than that of platinum blonde. I found these two pictures that you could compare.

when your hair is bleached it is just litrally peroxide...where as platinum is a colour. They are both simular colours and this is correct if I havnt been led the wrong way by the salon I use to work in!

I am a brunette, a very dark one, almost black. I do highlight some in the summer and add reddish tones in the winter, but the blonde shades will not work for me. LOL

I've noticed that blondes do get more attention from males. Why I do not know exactly, but from what I've been told (by male friends, exes, female friends) is that blonde is a more eye-catching color. Think "oooh shiny". Also it seems that some (most that I've met) blondes have more outgoing personalities therefore attracting more attention.

As to why women dye their hair blonde, they just want to cash in on the "blondes have more fun" stereotype (not meant in a bad way), or think they look better with blonde hair.

I'm blonde too and I think the obsession (particularly the platinum blonde one) is about attention. If you really think about it, if a blonde and a brunette walk in somewhere together, people will look at the blonde first. I'm naturally blonde too- and not complaining. I do streak my hair in the front and I think many darker haired girls go lighter-well, because they can't go darker-per-say. In Southern California of course, this is the classic look-my 13 yr old is a knock out in her long blonde hair-esp. since we have so many of hispanic origion-but I agree with you-their beautiful long tresses are great-so it bugs me when they go "red" or blonde. Streaks look cool, but we have alot that do "chunks" of color-I think it looks bad.

So many women have brunette hair: Arabs, blacks (I know afro but u know wht i mean), Hispanics, Asians, etc... Even most caucasians.

Natural blondes are very rare (only Northern European trait), hence, they are seen as far more desirable: Who wants something common when you can have something rare?

PS. I'm a natural brunette and my mum's a natural blonde.

On a deeper level blond can be more attractive. Let me explain.

When many children are young, they have fairer hair. Some people I know who have black hair had blond hair as a toddler. This can often mean that people associate blond hair with young children and as humans we instinctively find children to be cute and want to protect them (so that they survive and continue on the human race).

The same applies to large eyes in mammals, because our eyes never grow, babies have proportionally large eyes, and we find this trait to be attractive and so we protect our young. It is why we find some animals cute, their eyes are so large are remind us of babies of our own species and naturally we want to protect them.

When you think about it, the myth that blondes are dumb may have an ounce of truth. Children aren't necessarily dumb, but they are childish, and also rather innocent and naive which can be seen as a lack of intelligence.

So the fact that many very young children are fair haired, gives us the impression that anyone who is blond shares those same childlike qualities.

I'm with Saira C. peroxide is NOT a good lightening agent. It will leave your hair in a worse condition than a real dye job would and WILL NOT be a blonde you like.

Another thing to keep in mind too, is despite what some may tell you, if you don't like the way it turns out, you CANNOT simply dye it back to your natural color. Any time you lighten you are removing and altering pigment from your hair which has to be replaced to go back darker.

I hate to say it, but there is nothing that fits your description. If someone here says otherwise, I would say it is not trustworthy. The ONLY way to lighten your hair, is with peroxide and the like and it WILL damage your hair. Its just the way of it. You should not attempt to make something at home, ever. This is your head we are talking about after all. Some people use products such as "Sun-in", which can be purchased like box colors. Although it is essentially the same, permanent and somewhat damaging. It is a chemical that reacts with direct sun. I'm sure if you told your mother you are considering a home made dye job she might fold and take you to a salon. Try to work with her and see what happens. Sorry I can't give the answer you would like, but I work in a Salon and have seen the outcome of such ideas. Please trust me on this one. Also if someone suggests dumping peroxide on your head, please realize that is redic.

If your daughter has Black Hair, a regular blonde hair color won't do the trick, instead it will make black hair only slighty lightened with reddish tones( reddish Brown) . Regular Blonde hair color is only effective with those who have natural blonde or light brown hair. It is best to use a pre-lightener and bleach out the hair, and then use the desired regular blonde hair color. First try using a hair color remover to remove the black hair dye. If your daughter has natural Medium-Dark Brown hair use Bleach, like for example Clairol Born Blonde Maxi, or Loreal Feria #205 Extra Bleach Blonde. Try Someting like a Revlon Color silk # 80 Light Ash Blonde or Clariol Nice N'easy #127 Medium Blonde, they will do wonders, and they are gentle even on bleached hair . SO basically the darker the Brown the less regular blonde hair color will work. When in doubt Bleach, then use regular blonde hair dye. I strongly recommend Ash Blonde shades, because they do wonders. Speaking of revlon colorsilk, I also reccommend using Revlon Colorsilk Blonding. The 3 three blonding kits I mentioned really work. Talk about versatility. Make sure you use the hair color remover before bleaching, because bleaching is mostly safe on hair, that is new and fresh.

There isn't anything you can do for black hair to dye it back to the original color. It will either fall out, her scalp will bleed or become irritated, or if you're lucky, it will only lift the color to an ugly copper shade. Go to a salon in a few days and have them bleach it back to her original shade.

It may pain you but to take her to a Salon and have them put in Highlights ( foil) to break up the Black but if they offer to do the whole head say no because they will want to Bleach the whole head and her hair may fall out not to mention the straw factor. hmm... if she's black already, there's nothing she can do about it. well, still, there are three options: one is leave it as it is, but i guess she hates it, so the other two options are: cut it really short and keep cutting till the black is all gone or she could bleach it, but if she has a long hair, i wouldn't advice it at all. i myself did it once and regreted. the problem with bleaching hair in general is that you hair gets really damaged and it takes years to 'heal' it. cutting again is the best option. but she also has to be careful, cause if she bleaches black hair she'll probably turn out to be red as carrot or something like that. if she keeps bleaching it to reach the blond, most probably she will lose all of her hear.

Basically I have always had dark hair. I love my dark hair... but I get bored incredibly easily. The most I've ever done is some blonde highlights and I've done red a bunch of times. Something is making me thing "go blonde, go blonde!!" but will it look completely hideous with my features?

If you think it would look ok, how do I go about going from my dark hair color to blonde without a) costing $500 and b) completely ruining my hair? I have a lot of color history in my hair... both red and dark brown/black colors and about 2 inches of my natural color at the roots.

the only way you wont damage your hair is if you go get it done professionally, but there are ways to do it at home, granted you do it properly. i think you'd look great as a blonde, btw.

Sure you'd look fine, but keep in mind in most situations people look better with their natural hair colors.

TIPS:

1.) Keep your roots touched up. It looks so terrible to see dark roots coming into blonde hair.

2.) Make sure your eyebrows match. If you have to lighten those too do it.

P.S. my suggestion to those who want to dye your hair DONT it is truly a mess. Listen to those who say your hair is beautiful the way it is. I am willing to call myself dumb for dying it although I loved the auburn and the black underneath very punk-ish but still. You've made the mistake I have many times. I dyed my hair brown, naturally a blonde, and it wouldn't come out no matter how many stripping kits I used. I finally bleached it out and got a light blonde toner and used a really good shampoo and conditioner (Pantene) and let it grow.

All ya can do is strip the color off with a color corrector, or bleach it. Both are awful on the hair. Use a semi-permanent color on your hair until it's grown out to blonde again. That's all I can tell ya to keep it healthy.

40 volume peroxide is the HIGHEST strength peroxide and is generally professionally used for most blonde colors.

Colors are generally mixed 1:1, so that means 1 part color to 1 part peroxide. (If the color is in a 2.4 oz bottle, mix the entire bottle with 2.4 oz of peroxide.)

You'll need a color bottle too. They're at the Beauty Supply store. They're cheap, around $1. There are measurements on the side of the bottle so you can measure it exactly. Add the peroxide to the bottle first, then add the color...(since the color is already measured, all you'll have to do is pour the bottle's contents into the peroxide)

Color the ROOTS first, then the rest of the hair. If you have long hair you may need 2 bottles of color.

Most color applications take about 20 minutes. Shampoo and condition very well afterwards.

I don't know exactly how blonde you were before, so its hard to tell you whether you'll need the 'very light blonde' or just the 'light blonde'. The very light blonde is the lightest blonde that I know of. To get hair any blonder, you'd have to use bleach....and after stripping, your hair is already damaged.

If you just did it, try using dish soap to wash it. Make sure and have conditioner on hand, cuz it'll be stripped!

Beige is a cool base, which means green or blue. Next time, although I do NOT advocate doing your own color!, mix that with half a bottle of the same shade in neutral. Especially in blondes, it's important to have representation of all the natural colors.

If it's too late to try to lift the color out a bit, foils are a great solution. Good luck!

The last poster is right about the undertones of color. You should always use a neutral base when coloring light hair....I know too late right?

If you have a Sally's Beauty Supply near you, go in and ask for Malibu treatment. It comes in a little packet. You add the crystals to hot water and pour it over your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap and leave it on for about 30-45 min.

The Malibu will pull out some of the blue tint and bring out more of the golden tones to help bring it back to a reasonable color.

This will happen naturally with many washings, but it helps to get you there quicker.

The product is inexpensive so I recommend you always keep a packet on hand in case you ever decide to try again. ;)

Yes indeed, she knows what she is doing.. This is the only way to get the color stripped out if it is beyond 24 hours since you did it. The developer shouldn't be anything over 20..

30 vol left in foils too long might give you some breakage.

Next time you use a color try using a toner instead of a permanent tint. Were your ends much lighter than the golden color from the roots to the middle? IF so, the tint grabbed those ends because they were just too porus.

Have your hairdresser friend do your color or reccommend one next time.. And stay away from the platinum based too unless you want to be blue. If I use beige blonde toner on my lightened hair it turns it a nice pink... NOT so nice I should say.

Oh GOD no! Almost every Blonde I know, including myself, my child, all 20 or my cousins, all have "dark eyebrows." I would check with your salon as to what color blonde to color your hair. If your eyebrows have a red tone to them, I would stick with a yellow/red blonde. If their ashen (as are mine and my familys'), I would go for an Ash color.

Don't go to a salon just for your eyebrows, there's a way easier way to lighten them just a little, but not too much so that they'd clash.

There are certain bleaching sprays that you can spray into your hair that gradually turns it blonder; try rubbing some of it into your eyebrows or diluting it with water. I would suggest diluting it with water, one of my friends actually used an old bottle of that stuff that was empty, filled it with water that she used when she did her hair, and the top layer of her hair gradually turned blonde.

Just make sure that you dont dye your eyebrows lighter or the exact same color as your hair, that tends to look kinda weird on blondes.

I had my hair done today at a salon, and I'm not happy with the color. My natural color is a dark ash blonde which I've been maintaining at a medium golden blonde. I had about 4 inches of regrowth and went in to get everything evened out. They applied the all-over bleach but didn't use toner afterward. Now I feel that it's too orange and it really doesn't match my eyebrows or skin tone. It may be my fault - I told them I didn't want an ash blonde but something warmer. Well it's too warm! What I really want is a medium natural blonde. What can I do to get that at this point? I'm open to going back but if there's any good at-home tips I'd love to hear them.

I know the simple answer is just "go see a professional" but what should I expect if I do?

call the salon where you got it done and explain how you feel. they WANT you to be happy so they will fix it for you! find a picture or swatch of the color you have in mind (they will have tons of books and colors there too)...it could be as simple as toning it down with a violet color to counteract the brassiness or even just adding a cooler-toned hilite through it. but definitely give them a call..they will want to know and fix it for you

Ok so in my title it says what i have. I bleached my hair yes and PLEASE no salon suggestions. I was thinking about using manic panic virgin snow toner and shimmer lights shampoo to get my hair to what i want. It really isn't really dark but it is just darkish orange, orange, pale pink with some blonde in the front. If your hair is bleached the blonde parts will take up that dye your talking about but all the pink and orange will not because its just a color coat, you would need to bleach your hair again

I use to have bleached blonde hair that I dyed pink and when I tryed to bleach it blonde again it washed out all the cuticle in my hair so it became just like jelly and fell out!

Your best bet is to either let it just grow out or to dye it a darker color I would say a brown/red because of all the pink and orange

TO get a white colour you are best bleaching to a pale lemon colour and then using a toner to remove the yellow tones from the hair and bring it down to white. Using the colour wheel theory lilac toners remove yellow tones (these are also often called white toners). Special Effects and Manic Panic both make a good lilac toner. You could then either leave your hair the white colour or use a different vegetable dye such as Crazy Color Platinum or STargazer White to get the desired shade. These are temp colours so will only last ba few washes or a few weeks depending on the brand/colour used.

Like you, I was mortified and wanted to stay blonde forever. I have been highlighting my hair to various shades of blonde since I was 13 (20 years!).

funny, im actually a natural blonde.

I had artificial darker hair and then I bleached it like a month ago and it didnt go light enough so I bleached it again today. I had bought a blonde ash colour to go afterwards but on the box where it shows samples of "if your colour is this, it will be this" it shows the dye as something that will lighten the hair. Problem is, my hair is gonna be white when i take the bleach out, so will that hair dye have any effect? I mean, it wont get any lighter and what I had intended was for a blonde dye that would look more natural. Am I making any sense?

first of all lightening hair is tricky and you should not try to do it at home. if you have coloured over your natural light hair to something darker, going blonde again is actually considered 'colour correction' and should definetely be done in a salon.

that being said since you've already started - after you bleach your hair and are left with pale yellow (the lightest you should go is pale yellow - if you bleach it out to white then it is no longer hair and will probably fall out) you need to 'tone' it with another colour. you should not be using a high volume peroxide based colour to do this such as the one you have that shows lightening of the hair. this will add so much damage to your (hopefully not white) already too light hair. take it back to the store and stop. go to the salon to get some protein treatments to strengthen it up and get a semi-permanent colour put over it that does not 'lighten' with high volume peroxide. Like a gloss. Semi-permanents act like permanent colour on bleached hair.

I would stop everything and go to a salon right now, you are going to have heaps of hair falling out. do not put in a light blonde dye over your already bleached-too-much head. you just need a gloss (and mega-treatments)

BY THE WAY - if you use an ash on your hair that is not the correct level (IE: if your hair is too light for the colour) it will LOOK GREEN. the base of ash colours is green - they cut out all red tones. you should find something that says 'natural' as they will have red, blue and yellow in them which makes a natural sandy blonde with no brassiness and no green tinge. you need TO GO TO THE SALON!!

When a box shows that it can lighten darker hair, it only if your hair is naturally that color. Color can not lighten color. The one thing that I'm worried about is that you have bleached your hair a lot lately and when you put on that dye you are going to do more damage then you need to. You only need a color that deposits not lifts since you are going a little darker. Hair color that only deposits is about 100 times easier on your hair. I would suggest taking that box back and getting one with out the lifting agent. I hope this helps good luck!
