I have dyed light ash blonde hair, however I went to re dye my roots and they turned an ugly gold color. The dye I usually use, isn't taking the fresh growth on the roots. My hair is naturally a light ashy brown color. I've tried to redye the gold hoping it will lighten up to blonde, but no such luck.
I'm thinking about redying it a darker blonde, thinking that it will take out the gold tone at my roots. I would like opinions on what I should do.
Please don't tell me "DON'T DYE YOUR HAIR, IT'LL FALL OUT!" I've been dyeing my hair for ages, and it's in perfect, healthy condition. Also, my hair stylist is an option .. but I'm willing to go a bit darker for cheaper if it will fix my gold roots. :)
Light blonde hair but gold roots! Please help.?
Okay I have naturally ashy brown hair also, and I have been dyeing my hair blonde since I was eleven years old. So I have pretty much tried it all. For your gold roots I would first reccomend that you try a blue or purple shampoo. Artec as well as Bonacure (by Schwarzkopf) make excellent purple shampoo's that work very well. It will appear very dark in the bottle, but don't worry about it dyeing your hair purple... this will not happen. These shampoo's are specially formulated to remove the brassy undertones commonly found on blonde hair from either mineral deposits or not enough lift (which sounds like your problem). The purple shampoo is the least harmful method, but if this does not work, I would try applying a bleach with a higher level of developer. Store-bought bleach comes with a developer that is 20 volume (the developer is the white liquid). Go to a beauty suppy store and purchase a developer that is either 30 or 40 volume. Then mix this with either your regular bleach, or with Quickblue or Kaleidoscope hair bleach (both of these products are blue in color so they will not give you any brassy or gold tones)... apply the bleach to your roots where the gold appears (Do not apply it to the ends, this will likely be very damaging). Then leave the bleach on for ten to fifteen minutes (no longer than a half an hour) and wash out. Don't leave the bleach on for too long, or your hair will break off at the roots (I would know this due to personal experience... talk about bad hair day)... If your hair is damaged after you bleach it try using products by S-Factor. They are slightly costly, but they truly are the best on the market now for restoring moisture and softness to blonde hair. You can go a bit darker, but your ends will no doubt be lighter. LIghter ends don't hold color as well . What you can try if you really want to mess around is apply the darker (one shade should do it) to the ends first, and then to the roots. This will allow the ends a bit more time to process and the hair strands should come out more even.
Your best bet is to get in to see your professional . She can apply something to lighten up your roots, or she can use a toner to get rid of the gold and then color the ends up to match that. Good luck.
